[Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Vy Nguyen.]

The person who introduced boba to me was my brother. I remember he bought my first boba with his weekly saving from a street cart next to his middle school in Saigon. Since then, my brother and I have been drinking and trying different boba shops like crazy! I love boba so much that I named my shiba inu, “Boba”! *sigh*

Anyway, here’s a list of the most talked about boba places in San Jose that I check-in pretty often. In fact, you can suggest any of these locations to a friend who is going to San Jose for the first time!

  1. Bambu Desserts & Drinks

  2. Source: Yelp
    Recommended drinks:
    (1) Lychee Green Tea with NO Milk and Boba
    (2) Strawberry Smoothie with Boba (without milk can be an option)
    (3) Mocha Frappuccino with Boba
YES! This is NOT only my togo place for Vietnamese chè (sweet desserts) but also lychee green tea with boba. Believe it or not, the first Bambu ever opened in San Jose in 2008 by four sisters! Now, there are nearly 50 Bambu locations in 8 states! WAH!!!! Sometimes when I want something special, I would ask for a special order (strawberry and lychee green tea with combo jelly and boba). Just be nice, and they will be happy to make it for ya :)!

  3. Cool Tea Bar

  4. Source: Cool Tea Bar
    Recommended drinks:
    (1) Roasted Milk Tea (optional with boba or grass jelly)
    (2) Peach Green Milk Tea
    (3) Mango Green Tea
Their San Jose location recently popped up since last year, but they got extremely popular! No matters how early to late you go, you will see a line. People would line up for more than 10-15 minutes for the tea. Depending on how sweet you’d like your drink, they can go from 25% sugar to 200% sugar! Interested in fundraising or catering, just ask the cashier person!

  5. Fantasia

  6. Source: Yelp
    Recommended drinks:
    (1) Peach Green Tea
    (2) Lychee Green Tea
    (3) Jasmine Milk Tea
My ultimate favorite peach green tea is here! The best part about this location is that it locates right inside Santana Row aka the “Fancy car and restaurant street”. Imagined yourself sipping your boba tea, walking down a beautiful street and enjoying fancy cars driving by, what’s a life ya???

  7. Jazen Tea

  8. Source: Yelp
    Recommended drinks:
    (1) Lychee Explosion
    (2) Passion Paradise
    (3) Jasmine Milk Tea
The fruit bits inside their flavored teas are their highest selling points! Besides boba and flavored jellies, different fruit bits are on their toppings as well. Ah, did I tell you that this specific shop locates inside Phở Hòa? Uhm huh! Grab your self a bowl of pho or a Vietnamese rice dish in case you are in a hungry mode. Otherwise, they also have a variety of to-go snacks such as popcorn chicken and potato twists. After each purchase, they will give you a scratcher with two scratching circles (you can only scratch ONE to use the deal for the NEXT purchase).

  9. Bobo Drinks

    Recommended drinks:
    (1) Happy Heart Jar
    (2) Very Berry Jar
    (3) Beignets (I know!)
This is a relatively new franchise of boba brand that associates with a famous Vietnamese singer, Đan Trường. Although this franchise is a newbie, there are three giant locations with beautifully furnished interiors in San Jose (one on Story Rd, one on Silver Creek, and one on Santa Clara St aka Downtown San Jose). Besides their drinks, they also offer a long list of appetite including toast box, crepes, Vietnamese mixed rice paper salad, etc. If you are a first timer, don’t forget to ask for their Stamp Card – buy 9 and get the 10th one free!
